What ISO certification means on a job site

Pavements Australia runs an integrated management system independently certified to ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 14001 for environment and ISO 45001 for work health and safety. Those three certificates are the reason a procurement officer can tick a box. This is what they mean for the person standing on the road.

On a quality level, it means the job has an inspection and test plan before it starts, with hold points that stop the work until something has been checked and signed off. Compaction is tested, not assumed. Non-conformances are written down, corrected and closed out rather than quietly fixed and forgotten. And the records go to the client, because a surface that cannot be shown to meet the specification is not much use in a dispute two years later.

On a safety level, it means every worker, subcontractor and labour hire person has completed an induction before they start, and has demonstrated competency on whatever plant they are about to operate. Risks are identified in a safe work method statement that the crew has read and talked through at pre-start, not one that sits in a folder in the ute. Incidents are investigated for the cause, not the person.

On an environmental level, it means erosion and sediment controls are in place before the profiler turns up, bituminous products are handled with spill response ready, and waste goes where it is supposed to go. On a sensitive site, such as an alpine national park, it means a site-specific plan that reflects where the job actually is.

The certificates get audited every year by an external body. The system gets used every day. Both of those things have to be true for the paperwork to mean anything.
